Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has resolutely spearheaded a group of House Republicans this week opposing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s, R-Calif., bid for Speaker of the House.
On Thursday, Gaetz nominated President Donald Trump to be Speaker of the House in an act of defiance against establishment politicians, commenting on Twitter, “Make the House of Representatives Great Again!”
On Thursday, the House adjourned after three straight days of attempting to vote for a Speaker of the House, closing the evening with McCarthy losing a whopping 11 consecutive ballot rounds on the floor.
According to a new poll from Rasmussen, Americans are torn over whether McCarthy is the right choice for Speaker of the House now that Nancy Pelosi has been forced to give up her gavel.
Among Republicans, Rasmussen found that 48 percent of respondents surveyed believed that the House should choose McCarthy as Speaker, while 29 percent disagreed. Conversely, 23 percent said they were “Not Sure.”
President Trump has strongly supported McCarthy’s election, championing Republican unity and encouraging the 20 Republicans blocking McCarthy’s vote to give the House Minority Leader a chance.
As reported by RSBN, Trump stated on Truth Social this week that “Very good things are happening behind the scenes for the Republican Party. Intense but Smart negotiations between GREAT and PATRIOTIC people are ongoing. They all love our Country, and want something to go forward ASAP.”
The tension in the House has raised concerns among some Americans who are worried that the sense of GOP disunity may affect Republicans’ ability to elect a Speaker at all, as Democrat Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) has consistently garnered a hefty number of votes against McCarthy’s lacking plurality.
“DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARASSING DEFEAT,” Trump warned on Truth Social this week.
The House will proceed with voting on the next Speaker of the House on Friday.
