President Donald Trump celebrated Team USA after their 2-1 win over Canada—the first time the team has taken the gold in Olympic men’s hockey since 1980.
Speaking to the group via phone, President Trump congratulated America’s team for Saturday’s historic win.
“[The president] just spoke to the group expressing how proud he was of the group and congratulating everybody on the win,” said coach Mike Sullivan. “Obviously this game in a lot of ways was an inspiration to our country.”
The coach continued, “I can’t tell you how many texts I’ve received over the last day or so about watch parties at 8 in the morning. I think from a viewership standpoint in the United States, there were a lot of people paying attention, the president included.”
President Trump similarly called Team USA before the 2025 4 Nation’s final, in which the U.S. lost to Canada, according to the New York Post.
However, with this year’s historic victory, he did not hesitate to offer further accolades on Truth Social.
“Congratulations to our great U.S.A. Ice Hockey team. THEY WON THE GOLD. WOW!” he wrote.
In a series of follow-up posts, he exclaimed “WHAT A GAME” and “LOTS OF WINNING!!!”
“The most Gold Medals ever won by Team USA at the Olympics!” he concluded.
