President Donald Trump responded overnight on Truth Social after two Israeli workers were murdered near the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., late Wednesday.
The president condemned the criminal actions and offered condolences to the families of the victims.
“These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA. Condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that such things as this can happen! God Bless You ALL!” he wrote.
The shooting near the museum occurred at around 9:08 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Metropolitan Police. The Embassy of Israel to the U.S. identified the victims as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, who were set to be engaged, according to Fox News.
Danny Danon, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, also condemned the murders in a post on X.
Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old man from Chicago, has been taken into custody along with a firearm, according to police.
While in custody, he yelled, “Free, free Palestine!” Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said, according to the report.
“There is no active threat to the community,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said Wednesday night.
“The horrific incident is going to frighten a lot of people in our city and in our country, and I want to be clear that we will not tolerate this violence and hate in our city,” Bowser said. “We will not tolerate any acts of terrorism, and we’re going to stand together as a community to send a clear message that we will not tolerate antisemitism.”
“The fatal shooting that took place outside the event that took place at the Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. is a depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism. Harming the Jewish community is crossing a red line,” he wrote.
“We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act. Israel will continue to act resolutely to protect its citizens and representatives – everywhere in the world,” Danon continued.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi was also on the scene shortly after the events.
“I am on the scene of the horrible shooting outside the Washington, DC Capital Jewish Museum with @USAttyPirro. Praying for the victims of this violence as we work to learn more,” she posted to X.
