President Trump announced that he will soon be making an endorsement in the Texas GOP Senate primary. The primary election on Tuesday between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton resulted in neither candidate receiving 50 percent of the vote. Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, finished third in the race.
Paxton and Cornyn are set to face off once again in a May runoff election. Although President Trump did not make an official endorsement prior to the election, he stated in a Truth Social post on Wednesday that he would do so soon.
“The Republican Primary Race for the United States Senate in the Great State of Texas, a State I LOVE and won 3 times in Record Numbers (the HIGHEST vote ever recorded, by far!!!), cannot, for the good of the Party, and our Country, itself, be allowed to go on any longer,” President Trump said. “IT MUST STOP NOW!”
In the state Democratic Senate primary, State Rep. James Talarico defeated U.S. House Rep. Jasmine Crockett. The runoff election between the two primary candidates is critically important for the GOP, as both parties have recognized the Democratic candidate may have a higher chance of winning a Senate seat in Texas this year. Talarico is generally viewed by Republican strategists as a more viable general election candidate than Crockett. President Trump emphasized the strategic importance of the race and pointed out that the GOP would need to devote all its resources to defeating the Democratic opponent, rather than engaging in a protracted primary.
“We have an easy to beat, Radical Left Opponent, and we have to TOTALLY FOCUS on putting him away, quickly and decisively!” President Trump said. “Both John and Ken ran great races, but not good enough. Now, this one, must be PERFECT! My Endorsements within the Republican Party have been virtually insurmountable! It is such an honor to realize and say that almost everyone I Endorse WINS, and wins by a lot, especially in Texas!”
President Trump indicated that he would be making an endorsement soon, and stated that he would be asking the other candidate to withdraw from the race.
“I will be making my Endorsement soon, and will be asking the candidate that I don’t Endorse to immediately DROP OUT OF THE RACE! Is that fair?” President Trump said. “We must win in November!!!”
