President Trump signs his first executive orders of second term – here’s what they do

by Summer Lane

President Donald Trump signed his first executive orders of his second term on Monday night during a post-swearing-in celebration at the Capitol One Arena, where he enjoyed the traditional presidential parade and all the pomp and circumstance surrounding the inaugural events.

The president declared during prepared remarks, “We are restoring control of the government for the people!”

Incredibly, President Trump sat down at a desk onstage, where he signed a set of executive orders in front of the entire world, allowing the American people to watch him get to work, on day one as he has long promised.

Technically, the president signed his first executive orders earlier in the afternoon when he signed documents at the U.S. Capitol related to cabinet and cabinet-level appointments. But the big signing at the Capitol One Arena marked the delivery of action-oriented directives the American people have been waiting for.

He fronted his historic signings with a set of uplifting remarks to signify the importance of the day.

Here are the executive actions he took onstage, with a stroke of his presidential pen:

  • Recision of 78 Biden-era executive orders, memorandums, and other,
  • Regulatory freeze preventing federal bureaucrats from issuing any more regulations until the new administration gets things under control,
  • Freeze on all federal hiring with the exception of the military and other specific areas for the same reason,
  • Requirement for federal employees to return to full-time, in person work,
  • Directive to every department and agency in the federal government to address the cost of living crisis,
  • Withdrawal from the Paris Climate Treaty, which the president said would save America over $1 trillion,
  • This previous EO also included a letter transmitted to the U.N. explaining the withdrawal,
  • Directive to the federal government ordering the restoration of freedom of speech and preventing government censorship going forward,
  • Directive to the federal government ending the weaponization of government against the political adversaries of the previous administration.

President Trump said he would be heading back to the Oval Office after this flurry of first signings to issue more executive orders to address a litany of other important issues. He also promised during his remarks to free the January 6 political prisoners. It is unclear if that order was included as part of the 78-item Biden-era recision order or if this will happen in the Oval Office.
