President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on Thursday designating May 3 and 4 as National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, honoring the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

This annual observance pays tribute to the courage and dedication of firefighters across the United States.

“The First Lady and I are grateful for the devotion of all who serve their communities and our country in this extraordinary way.  Firefighters often enter our lives only when something has gone catastrophically wrong, yet they stand ready every day to protect our people and communities,” the proclamation declared.

“This National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, we remember the American patriots who gave their lives in service to others, and pray for the courageous families who carry on in their absence,” it added.

The proclamation emphasizes the nation’s gratitude for the selfless service of firefighters who risk their lives to protect communities. It acknowledges the profound loss experienced by the fallen heroes’ families, friends and colleagues. The President’s declaration serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers firefighters face and the unwavering commitment they demonstrate daily.

During this memorial weekend, ceremonies and events are held nationwide to honor and remember those who have perished in the line of duty. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) organizes the national tribute, bringing together thousands of attendees, including family members, fellow firefighters, and public officials.

The NFFF recorded 70 firefighters who died in the previous year, including photos and details of their service. These fallen heroes will be honored at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

The proclamation encourages all Americans to participate in commemorative activities, such as lowering flags to half-staff, observing moments of silence, and attending memorial services. It also highlights the importance of supporting the families left behind, ensuring they receive the recognition and assistance they deserve.

Trump also recognized Corey Comperatore in the proclamation. Competratore “lost his life shielding his family from the barrage of assassin’s bullets that pierced the air during my rally last July in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump wrote. “His bravery and selflessness on that fateful day exemplify the dedication and courage that define America’s cadre of firefighters.”
