Joe Biden received harsh criticism from President Donald Trump over his tone deaf and inappropriate reaction to the tragic Nashville school shooting on Monday, which claimed six lives, including three children.
“Somebody messed up. It was so horrible,” President Trump said on the John Fredericks Radio Network program when prompted about Biden’s response to Monday’s school shooting, where three children and three adults died at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, The Hill reported.
Fox News reported that during his first public appearance following the fatal school shooting, Biden cracked a number of offensive jokes, including one suggesting that the only reason he showed up was because he heard there would be ice cream.
“My name is Joe Biden. I’m Dr. Jill Biden’s husband,” Biden told reporters following the devastating shooting. “I eat Jeni’s ice cream — chocolate chip. I came down because I heard there was chocolate chip ice cream,” he continued, adding that he has “a whole refrigerator full upstairs.”
According to Fox, when asked if he thought Christians were the target of the school shooting, Biden responded, “I have no idea.” However, Biden grinned and remarked, “Well, I probably don’t then,” when told that Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., thought the attack was a hate crime against Christians.
Biden later said he was “joking” and still had “no idea.”
“Everyone is waiting to hear his words and he is talking about ice cream,” President Trump said. “With a laugh, he is laughing about it. He is joking about it.”
Nevertheless, the 45th president commended the actions of the Nashville police, saying that they “acted unbelievably well” with their “speed” and “bravery.”
