President Trump is reasserting his belief in traditional American ideals and pushing back against the growing popularity of collectivist policies.
In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump acknowledged the appeal of the promises of communism, while pointing out the eventual devastation that results when the policies are enacted.
“Communists always do well with the Voters or, as they would say, THE PEOPLE, in the Early Years!” President Trump said. “But, in the end, the Country, State, or City, GOES TO HELL! Great Violence proceeds at levels never seen before, and the entity dissolves into Poverty, Squalor, and Crime. Remember, breathtaking ‘Popularity’ first, and then, guaranteed DEATH AND DESTRUCTION!”
Trump echoed his anti-communist sentiments in a conversation with reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday. When asked about his post, Trump said promises of “free everything” sound good but lead to death and destruction “100 percent of the time.”
Academics have estimated the total number of deaths caused by communist regimes to be over 94 million, including executions, genocides and the creation of artificial famines. Trump said he wrote his Truth Social post in response to recent left-wing policies enacted in states such as New York and California, and the rise of candidates such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who campaigned as a democratic socialist. Trump noted that he has a good personal relationship with Mamdani, who has visited the White House twice since taking office.
“I liked him very much,” President Trump said. He pointed out that although he gets along with Mamdani personally, he disagrees with the policies he champions, including proposals to raise taxes on high earners.
“I don’t understand why he thinks it’s okay for all these companies that pay hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes a year to leave,” President Trump said. “You’re not going to have any tax base, and you’re going to end up in hunger and squalor and death and destruction.” Trump acknowledged that the American tradition of free enterprise is “a tougher sell,” but stated that the system was what made America great.
