In a Friday morning Truth Social post, President Trump called on congressional Republicans to include the SAVE Act in the next continuing resolution to shine a light on the Democrat’s opposition to stopping non-citizens from voting.
The measure passed in the House on Wednesday with the support of just five Democrats, but it will likely never see the light of day after it lands on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s desk.
Trump emphatically wrote in all caps, “REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS SHOULD ATTACH THE VERY IMPORTANT SAVE ACT TO THE NEXT CONTINUING RESOLUTION. STOP THE STEAL, GUARD THE VOTE. LET THE DEMOCRATS TRY TO EXPLAIN WHY THEY ARE AGAINST THIS – NOT DOABLE!!! DJT”
Including the SAVE Act in a continuing resolution could require the matter to be debated in both chambers, forcing the Democrats to try and justify their vote.
Democrats and the Biden administration recently claimed that their opposition to the legislation is because it is against federal law for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. However, Republicans have argued that there are no safeguards in place to prevent non-citizens from voting.
Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who introduced the legislation in the House, pointed out that non-citizens have been illegally obtaining Social Security numbers. He told Breitbart, “So, of course, they’re voting.” Roy continued, stating, “And then, importantly, our own federal government [is] registering these people automatically – through Medicaid, through forced DMV registration – under federal law.”
Many Republican states are also taking action to prevent noncitizens from voting. Some states are conducting audits to weed out ineligible voters. Georgia began checking the citizenship status of every registrant in 2022.
