President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States is engaged in discussions with what he described as a “new and more reasonable” Iranian leadership to end the ongoing conflict, while warning of potential military escalation if an agreement is not reached.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump expressed optimism about negotiations but said the U.S. is prepared to act if its conditions are not met.

“The United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran,” the president wrote.

“Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched.’ This will be in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime’s 47 year ‘Reign of Terror.’ Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he added.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping route through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes, making it central to international energy markets.

The president’s reference to a “new” Iranian regime suggests possible changes within the country’s leadership, though no official confirmation has been provided by Iranian authorities.

U.S. officials have said military assets remain positioned across the region as negotiations continue, giving the administration options if talks fail. Analysts say the combination of diplomatic outreach and military pressure reflects an effort to push Iran toward a settlement while maintaining leverage.

Critics have raised concerns about the potential humanitarian and environmental impact of strikes on infrastructure, while supporters argue that strong deterrence could help prevent a prolonged conflict.

President Trump indicated he believes an agreement is likely but reiterated that the United States is prepared to escalate if necessary.
