President Trump is working with Democratic leaders to preserve the natural beauty of the Great Lakes. In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump shared that he had met with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan to discuss plans to protect the Great Lakes from the effects of Asian Carp, a fish species that can be destructive to the ecosystem.

“I’m working with Governor Gretchen Whitmer on trying to save The Great Lakes from the rather violent and destructive Asian Carp, which is rapidly taking over Lake Michigan, and all of the beautiful surrounds,” President Trump said.

Environmental organizations have been working for over a decade to protect the Great Lakes from an invasion of Asian Carp. According to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, the species consumes a massive amount of plankton. The presence of Asian Carp could impact the food supply for existing species within the Lakes, disrupting the balance of the entire environment.

Gov. Whitmer had previously lobbied President Trump to authorize the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, which will consist of building protective barriers around the Great Lakes. Whitmer discussed other forms of state aid with President Trump, including federal relief for recent ice storms.

Trump noted that he would be asking fellow executives to join the effort as well, including governors of other surrounding states and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. The president subtly invoked his ongoing jab towards former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he repeatedly joked could be a governor if Canada were to become the 51st U.S. state.

“I’ll be asking other Governors to join into this fight, including those of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, New York and, of course, the future Governor of Canada, Mark Carney, who I know will be happy to contribute to this worthy cause.”

President Trump also mentioned the effort to preserve the Great Salt Lake in Utah, which has experienced a steady decline in water levels. Restoring the Great Salt Lake has been a priority for Utah state officials, with the goal of replenishing water levels in time for the 2034 Winter Olympics, which will take place in Salt Lake City.

“Separately, I am also working to save The Great Salt Lake, in Utah, which, in a short period of time, if nothing is done, will have no water,” President Trump said. “This is on top of everything else I am doing. Only “TRUMP” CAN DO IT!”
