President Trump’s tariffs lead to $13B Stellantis investment in U.S. manufacturing

Despite false claims and criticisms from naysayers, President Trump’s tariffs have led to a massive investment that will boost U.S. manufacturing.

Throughout his campaign, President Trump made his intentions to bring back U.S. manufacturing very clear, and the latest investment from car automaker Stellantis is proof that he is keeping his promises. His 25 percent tariffs on foreign-made cars had kick-started this investment.

According to Breitbart, the company is investing a whopping $13 billion into the nation’s “Rust Belt.” The carmaker announced plans to restore local production.

Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, Stellantis CEO, said in a statement, “This investment in the U.S. – the single largest in the Company’s history – will drive our growth, strengthen our manufacturing footprint and bring more American jobs to the states we call home.”

Part of the $13 billion includes $600 million to reopen the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Illinois, after it was closed during the Biden Administration. According to a press release from Stellantis, the investment will expand U.S. production by 50 percent with five new vehicle launches and 19 product actions. The investment will also result in the addition of more than 5,000 jobs at plants in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana.

“As we begin our next 100 years, we are putting the customer at the center of our strategy, expanding our vehicle offerings, and giving them the freedom to choose the products they want and love.”

In a significant move, Stellantis also plans to return production of the Jeep Compass to the U.S. after previously planning to manufacture the model at a plant in Brampton, Ontario, west of Toronto. However, this production ended in December 2023 and was never restarted.

Despite threats from the Canadian government that involve lawsuits if the automaker doesn’t fulfill its commitment to Brampton workers, Stellantis is looking forward to this next chapter, with Filosa saying, “Accelerating growth in the U.S. has been a top priority since my first day. Success in America is not just good for Stellantis in the U.S. — it makes us stronger everywhere.”
