House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., claimed that the committee is “accelerating” its investigation into President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents amid rumors that the investigation is coming to an end, according to Fox News.
Reports from earlier this month claimed that Special Counsel Robert Hur, overseeing the year-long investigation into Biden and his staff for allegedly mishandling sensitive materials, would not be charging anyone within the case, according to CNN.
However, regardless of Hur’s rumored decision, Comer pushed back with an opinion piece on Fox News noting that the investigation is “anything but closed.”
“If anyone other than @POTUS had classified documents in their home & garage, they would face criminal charges from DOJ. Anyone who questions whether there is a two-tiered justice system need not look further than Joe Biden,” Comer wrote in a tweet.
The Oversight Committee Chair’s opinion piece outlined the “obtained information” the committee has, allegedly contradicting the White House’s and Biden’s personal attorneys’ statements regarding the discovery of documents at Penn Biden Center.
In early January, a White House lawyer revealed there was a “small number” of classified, marked documents found at the Penn Biden Center in November 2022, merely a few days before midterm elections, according to NBC News. Before vacating the office center, Biden’s attorneys claimed to have found the documents within a locked closet, the outlet reported.
Comer, however, claims that the Oversight Committee has found evidence that the team didn’t originally find the documents in November 2022, stating that the “original timeline” reportedly dates back 18 months to March 2021.
According to Comer, President Biden allegedly used “significant federal resources” to access and secure what he claimed as “personal items” from the Penn Biden Center. Additionally, witness testimony to the Committee allegedly pushes back on the White House’s claim that the items were in a “locked closet,” noting that the documents were allegedly not always held there.
Comer continued to highlight the committee’s concerns over Biden’s family foreign business, emphasizing that the president “may have retained sensitive documents” relating to specific countries that “brought in millions” for the family business, according to the op-ed.
The House Oversight Committee previously obtained financial records that allegedly reveal that Biden family members, business associates, and their related companies received “significant payments” from individuals and companies in Ukraine, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, and Romania.
“President Biden’s mishandling of classified material and his involvement in his family’s business schemes threaten our national security,” Comer wrote in his op-ed piece. “We owe it to the American people to determine whether Biden used these classified documents to enrich his family, placing our nation in even greater jeopardy.”
