Republican Dave McCormick has been elected the next U.S. Senator from the state of Pennsylvania, defeating three-term incumbent Democrat Sen. Bob Casey in an upset.
McCormick, an Army veteran, businessman and former Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs, was projected by the Associated Press to win the seat by roughly 32,000 votes on Thursday.
The senator-elect received 48.5 percent of the vote of the nearly seven million cast, while Casey garnered 48.5 percent with nearly 99 percent of the precincts reporting, per the Associated Press.
This slim margin will likely result in a recount in accordance with Pennsylvania law, according to the New York Post, which requires races decided by less than 0.5 points to be examined.
If this takes place, the recount will begin by Nov. 14, and must be completed by Nov. 26, the outlet reported.
Although he was defeated, Casey nonetheless outran Kamala Harris, who lost Pennsylvania by nearly two points against President-elect Donald Trump.
With McCormick’s victory, Republicans have earned their fourth flip in the U.S. Senate, bringing their majority to 53 seats to Democrats’ 47 in the upper chamber.
Republicans also flipped Democrat-held seats in West Virginia, Ohio and Montana, thus officially retaking control of the U.S. Senate.
