House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., has declared that former Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle’s resignation will not be the end of their pursuit for justice after the attempt on President Trump’s life.
He posted to X Tuesday morning, noting, “The Oversight Committee’s hearing resulted in Secret Service Director Cheatle’s resignation and there will be more accountability to come.”
His post included a statement that said, “The Secret Service has a no-fail mission, yet it failed historically on Director Cheatle’s watch.”
Comer described the lack of confidence due to “Egregious security failures” and added that although her resignation is “a step toward accountability,” there remains a need for “full accounting” to prevent other failures in the future.
“We will continue our oversight of the Secret Service in support of the House Task Force to deliver transparency, accountability, and solutions to ensure this never happens again,” he concluded.
Cheatle resigned Tuesday morning after both Republicans and Democrats called for her removal during the House Oversight Committee hearing on Monday, per Axios.
On Tuesday, witnesses testified before the committee to investigate the assassination attempt.
