Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, easily defeated state Sen. Jim Carlin in Iowa’s Senate Republican primary Tuesday night.
According to the Des Moines Register, the Associated Press called the race for the Trump-endorsed congressional candidate half an hour after polls closed. Grassley’s victory signals President Donald Trump’s stature in the Republican Party as yet another Trump-endorsed candidate to win in a key state.
“I love serving the people of Iowa,” Grassley said in a statement following Tuesday night’s victory. “Now that the primary’s over, I want everybody to unite so we can have a big victory in November. A big victory in Iowa contributes to Republicans taking over control of the United States Senate and House of Representatives.”
Being one of the longest-serving senators, Grassley was able to snatch an endorsement from Trump during a rally in Iowa last October.
Surrounded by hundreds of supporters, Trump said during an October rally he was “thrilled to announce tonight that Senator Chuck Grassley has my complete and total endorsement for reelection.”
Grassley will face off Democrat challenger Michael Franken in November’s general election.
