Democrat Senator John Fetterman (Pa.) sustained a fall early Thursday morning and has been transported to a hospital, a spokesperson said.
According to an official statement, the senator sustained a fall during an “early morning walk” near his home in Braddock.
“Out of an abundance of caution, he was transported to a hospital in Pittsburgh. Upon evaluation, it was established he had a ventricular fibrillation flare-up that led to Senator Fetterman feeling light-headed, falling to the ground and hitting his face with minor injuries,” the spokesperson said.
According to Fetterman’s spokesperson, the senator remarked, “If you thought my face looked bad before, wait until you see it now!”
The senator is doing “well” and recovering at the hospital, his spokesperson said, and he will remain there “so doctors can fine-tune his medication regimen.”
They added, “Senator Fetterman is grateful for the EMTs, doctors, and nurses who are providing his care.”
Fetterman, 56, has become a well-known figure in the Democratic Party and has notoriously leaned moderate over the past few years. He is also somewhat infamous for routinely wearing casual clothing to the U.S. Capitol, and is often seen wearing a hoodie and shorts in D.C.
He told CNN in 2023 that he chose to dress casually for “comfort, basically, and it’s kind of hard to find suits in this size, too.”
Fetterman continued, “I believe that it’s not the person that is made by how they dress.”
The Pennsylvania lawmaker also has a long history of heart problems. In 2022, he suffered a stroke and received an implanted pacemaker with a defibrillator while serving as the state’s lieutenant governor. This device is designed to stop irregular heartbeats.
He is currently hospitalized in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, per his spokesperson.
