Dr. Mehmet Oz was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday as the next head of Medicare and Medicaid Services. Oz was nominated by President Trump to manage the programs that provide health insurance for over half of Americans.
The Senate voted along party lines to confirm Dr. Oz. In his capacity as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Oz will be responsible for overseeing $1.5 trillion in federal spending allocated to these programs. The position includes making decisions on significant issues, including the nature of coverage for health procedures and the rates at which physicians are reimbursed for providing care to Medicare and Medicaid patients.
The Medicare program is directed at senior citizens and provides healthcare for people over the age of 65. The program provides coverage for approximately 65 million Americans.
Medicaid is a needs-based program for low-income Americans, providing services for approximately 72 million people. In his new role, Dr. Oz will also oversee the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which is specifically allocated for children from low-income families and provides services for approximately 7 million people.
Dr. Oz first ventured into the political realm with a bid for Pennsylvania’s open Senate seat in 2022. He was defeated by Democratic candidate, Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa.
Before his entrance into politics, Dr. Oz was a prominent celebrity physician and host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” which premiered in 2009 and continued to air until he began his Senate campaign in 2021. Oz initially rose to prominence as a regular guest and medical expert on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. Winfrey was instrumental in producing his television show and introducing him to a national audience.
Dr. Oz was a renowned heart surgeon in his private practice. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard and his doctorate in medicine and master’s in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton Business School. In his nomination of Dr. Oz for the position, President Trump said there was “no physician more qualified and capable than Dr. Oz to Make America Healthy Again.”
