Truck driver who spent $153 on State Senate race may unseat Democrat incumbent

State Senate President of New Jersey Steve Sweeney, a Democrat, may lose re-election to Ed Durr, a Republican truck driver who spent just $153 on his race over the course of the election cycle.

Durr’s mother told NBC 10 that, “Not everybody has to have a lot of money to run. All they have to do is have a heart for the people, and he’s got a heart for the working people,” Gloria Durr said.

She also told NBC 10 that her husband, Edward Durr Sr., died only two weeks ago and, “was right there by his dad’s side throughout.”

Durr decided to run for office after the state of New Jersey denied him a concealed carry permit even though he has a clean record. Campaign finance reports show that the only thing Durr spent money on was Dunkin’ for staff, and some flyers and business cards, according to NBC10.

“Well, I’m a numbers guy and I’ve looked at the numbers over the years,” Durr said in August during an interview with Elizabeth Nader “We have a district that is 150,00 voters. Senator Sweeney has never broken 32,000 votes …. and so I felt if he can’t even get half the district, that means there’s numbers out there to be taken, and you just have to get people to come out and vote. I believe if they come out and vote, we could win,” Sweeney said.

Sweeney won re-election last election cycle after surviving probably the most expensive state Senate race in history, according to Politico.

The tight race has not yet been called.
