During his press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump declared plans during his second term to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory. It’s appropriate. Mexico has to stop pouring millions of people into our country,” Trump said to reporters.
The incoming 47th president’s announcement sparked ongoing discussions about Trump enforcing 25 percent tariffs to stop the flow of millions of illegal migrants at record numbers and illicit drug trafficking from the U.S.-Mexican border.
With Mexico being one of America’s largest trade partners, these proposed tariffs will put pressure back on Mexico’s government to deter illegal border crossings for illegal migrants seeking asylum.
Trump’s plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico is a defining moment to reclaim what belongs to America as Trump stated, “It’s ours.”
