President Donald Trump criticized Brazil’s government on Wednesday, condemning its prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro and accusing the country of infringing on free speech and interfering with American social media platforms.
In a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Trump called Bolsonaro’s trial an “international disgrace” and demanded it be stopped. “This trial should not be taking place. It is a Witch Hunt that should end IMMEDIATELY!” Trump wrote.
Bolsonaro faces charges related to an alleged plot to overturn the results of Brazil’s 2022 election, which he narrowly lost to Lula. Prosecutors say the scheme included plans for political violence, accusations Bolsonaro denies. The former president remains a prominent figure in Brazilian politics and continues to enjoy widespread support.
Trump has frequently defended Bolsonaro and reiterated his support this week. “The only Trial that should be happening is a Trial by the Voters of Brazil — It’s called an Election. LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE!” Trump wrote on social media.
Trump’s post also quoted from his earlier statement condemning Brazil’s lawfare against Bolsonaro.
“Brazil is doing a terrible thing on their treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro. I have watched, as has the World, as they have done nothing but come after him, day after day, night after night, month after month, year after year! He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE,” the president wrote.
In addition to denouncing Bolsonaro’s prosecution, Trump criticized Brazil’s Supreme Court for censoring American-based social media platforms. The court has issued rulings holding tech companies accountable for user content and previously banned access to Elon Musk’s X social media platform in Brazil.
“Brazil’s insidious attacks on Free Elections, and the fundamental Free Speech Rights of Americans” prompted Trump to announce a 50% tariff on all Brazilian imports beginning August 1, he wrote. Trump claimed the tariff was necessary to address “grave injustices of the current regime.”
The letter is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to impose new trade penalties on multiple countries. However, the rate set for Brazil is the highest announced so far.
