President Donald Trump announced a new trade framework with Japan on Tuesday, announcing a 15 percent tariff on imported Japanese goods while promoting the deal as a major economic boost for the United States.

“We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made. Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 Billion Dollars into the United States, which will receive 90% of the Profits. This Deal will create Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs — There has never been anything like it,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Perhaps most importantly, Japan will open their Country to Trade including Cars and Trucks, Rice and certain other Agricultural Products, and other things. Japan will pay Reciprocal Tariffs to the United States of 15%. This is a very exciting time for the United States of America, and especially for the fact that we will continue to always have a great relationship with the Country of Japan. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he concluded.

The president said Japan, under his direction, had agreed to invest $550 billion in the U.S. and open its economy further to American-made automobiles and agricultural goods, including rice. The 15 percent tariff represents a significant reduction from the 25 percent rate Trump previously warned could take effect beginning Aug. 1 in a letter to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The announcement follows weeks of economic uncertainty after Trump’s initial tariff proposals in April triggered market volatility and concerns about slowing growth. While some questions remain, the White House is promoting the new deal as evidence of Trump’s negotiating strength and his effort to prioritize American industry.

The administration argues the tariff revenue will help reduce the federal budget deficit and encourage companies to relocate production to the U.S., thereby addressing long-standing trade imbalances.

As part of a broader trade realignment, Trump also announced new agreements with the Philippines and Indonesia. Under the framework, Philippine goods will face a 19 percent tariff, while U.S. exports to the country will remain duty-free. Trump also reaffirmed a 19 percent tariff on goods from Indonesia.

Trump has set an Aug. 1 deadline to implement the tariffs outlined in his letters to world leaders. The administration has signaled that further talks are underway, including discussions with the European Union. Trump said Tuesday night that EU representatives would arrive in Washington on Wednesday for negotiations.
