As President Donald Trump sets up his cabinet for his second term as the 47th President of the United States, he is also making good on his promise to appoint major players seeking government reform. Tuesday night, he announced that he is creating a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) headed by billionaire Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
He wrote, “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement.”
“Republican politicians have dreamed about the objectives of ‘DOGE’ for a long time,” he went on, describing how this new department will offer advice from outside of the government and work with the Trump administration to “drive large scale structural reform.”
He also added that this department will end “massive waste and fraud” to “liberate our Economy.” Musk and Ramaswamy’s work in DOGE is set to be finished by Independence Day of 2026.
President Trump called it “the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence.”
Musk and Ramaswamy have been vocal proponents of government reform. Musk especially, has supported cryptocurrency endeavors free from government interference. Dogecoin has been one of his favorite cryptocurrencies, and that of other tech enthusiasts because it was created as a joke off of a meme.
Musk even joked about it in a skit on Saturday Night Live.
That joke is now being carried into the White House with the DOGE team expected to make significant changes in American government policy.
But despite the lighthearted nature of the acronym, Ramaswamy is taking his role in the DOGE seriously. He posted to X on the subject, stating, “DOGE will soon begin crowdsourcing examples of government waste, fraud, & and abuse.”
“Americans voted for drastic government reform & they deserve to be part of fixing it,” he added.
He also noted, “And yes, this means I’m withdrawing myself from consideration for the pending Senate appointment in Ohio. Whoever Governor DeWine appoints to JD’s seat has some big shoes to fill.”
“I will help them however I can,” he concluded.
