Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt (R) warned the FBI in a scathing letter that their impending audit of the state’s Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) permit holder records was a violation of state law and an infringement of citizens’ Second Amendment rights.
In July, Schmitt wrote to FBI Director Christopher Wray, citing an upcoming August audit that would reportedly include an “onsite review” of CCW permits.
“Let me be perfectly clear,” Schmitt wrote. “Allowing federal agents from the FBI to have access to records of Missourians who have a permit to carry a concealed weapon violates Missouri law and infringes on our Second Amendment rights.”
Schmitt further expanded on the specific law that barred state citizens’ CCW records from being handed over to the federal government, noting that he was a state senator when the law was originally passed. “The people’s elected representatives passed this law after it became known that the Obama Administration wanted to know which Missourians had firearms…” he said.
“You may wonder why there is such a strong suspicion of federal agents here in the ‘Show Me State,’” Schmitt went on. “Simply put, Missourians are hard-working, law-abiding citizens who don ‘t need a national nanny-state keeping tabs on us.”
He further cited “story after story of incompetence and corruption at the highest levels of the FBI.” He added that Missourians’ trust in the FBI was at “an all-time low.”
Schmitt’s letter unabashedly ripped the FBI for its “deep-staters,” singling out James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, and Lisa Page as having “endlessly investigated fake allegations fabricated by the Hillary Clinton campaign and Democratic operatives.” He also called out the bureau for “sitting on evidence of criminal activity on Hunter Biden’s laptop for years.”
“In light of all these facts, Missourians have concluded that the FBI leadership in Washington D.C. has been weaponized for political gain,” he concluded. “You have lost our trust and you seem to be completely indifferent toward trying to rebuild it.”
Schmitt is a Trump-endorsed candidate for the U.S. Senate. In early August, Schmitt won his primary election and netted the GOP Senate nomination heading to the general election.
