Tina Peters, the former Colorado county clerk convicted in connection with a breach of election system security following the 2020 election, was released from prison Monday after Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis commuted her sentence.

The Colorado Department of Corrections confirmed Peters’ release and said it would provide no additional details regarding the 70-year-old former inmate.

Polis shortened Peters’ nine-year prison sentence last month after a sustained public campaign by President Donald Trump urging her release. Peters became one of the first local election officials charged in connection with efforts to challenge the integrity of the 2020 presidential election.

Prosecutors said Peters allowed an outside computer expert linked to Mike Lindell to access election equipment in Mesa County, Colorado, during a 2021 software update involving Dominion Voting Systems machines. Authorities said copies of confidential election system data, including passwords and images from the system upgrade, were later distributed online.

In 2024, a Mesa County jury convicted Peters on multiple charges, including attempting to influence a public servant, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation and official misconduct.

An appeals court upheld her conviction earlier this year but ordered resentencing, ruling the trial judge improperly considered Peters’ public statements about election fraud when imposing punishment.

Because Peters was convicted under state law, President Donald Trump could not issue a presidential pardon. Instead, he publicly pressured Polis to commute the sentence, criticizing the governor on social media and reportedly excluding him from a White House meeting with governors.

Peters appeared on Bannon’s WarRoom show following her release.

“It’s been quite the ordeal, but I really want to thank God for His faithfulness and for getting me through it,” Peters said.

President Trump has long advocated for her release, calling her a “patriot” in a March Truth Social post.

“For years, Democrats ignored Violent and Vicious Crime of all shapes, sizes, colors, and types. Violent Criminals who should have been locked up were allowed to attack again. Democrats were also far too happy to let in the worst from the worst countries so they could rip off American Taxpayers,” President Trump wrote.
