The 2024 presidential debate took a chilling turn when the topic shifted to the border crisis. Although Vice President Kamala Harris attempted to deflect from her role in the increase in illegal immigration throughout the Biden administration, Trump decried her for related crime increases and noted reports that illegal immigrants from Haiti are “eating the dogs.”
He said, “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs.” He spoke about claims that cats, dogs, and other protected species have been killed by illegal immigrants.
This topic exploded on social media after videos and claims that illegal immigrants were killing and eating pets circulated before the debate.
According to The Federalist, 20,000 Haitian immigrants have been placed in the 60,000-person city of Springfield, Ohio. The outlet shared a local police call that recorded a concerned citizen’s report that Haitian immigrants were carrying geese. It was also noted that residents have complained about the execution of local wildlife in public spaces.
This is not the first time that animals have been the alleged target of illegal immigrants. In November of last year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Nebraska confirmed that Domingo Zetino Hernandez, a 21-year-old Guatemalan man, was sentenced for killing a bald eagle.
President Trump hammered Harris on the subject during the debate and warned about importing the third world into the United States. He stated that if she wins, “We’ll end up being Venezuela on steroids.”
