The Trump campaign released a statement on Monday criticizing the European Union of seeking to “meddle” in the U.S. presidential election after a top official sent a letter to Elon Musk warning against promoting “harmful content” ahead of his interview with President Donald Trump.
Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Chuen shared the strong words in response to EU Commissioner Thierry Breton’s efforts.
“The European Union should mind their own business instead of trying to meddle in the U.S. Presidential election. Only in Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ America can an un-Democratic foreign organization feel emboldened enough to tell this country what to do,” he wrote.
“They know that a President Trump victory means America will no longer be ripped off because he will smartly utilize tariffs and renegotiated trade deals that puts America First. Let us be very clear: the European Union is an enemy of free speech and has no authority of any kind to dictate how we campaign,” Chueng added.
Breton’s letter to Musk included a strong statement of warning ahead of the letter.
“With great audience comes greater responsibility,” Breton wrote in a post on X.
“As there is a risk of amplification of potentially harmful content in in connection with events with major audience around the world, I sent this letter to @elonmusk,” he continued.
Musk publicly responded to the letter in a post on X that included explicit meme indicating he had no intent to comply.
“To be honest, I really wanted to respond with this Tropic Thunder meme, but I would NEVER do something so rude & irresponsible!” he instead stated ahead of the meme.
As of early Tuesday morning, “Combined views of the conversation with
@realDonaldTrump and subsequent discussion by other accounts now ~1 billion,” according to Musk.
The interview included over a 30-minute delay before its launch, with X claiming that an attack on its servers sought to sabotage the event.
The Trump campaign followed the interview with a news release featuring several of the top moments from the X Space audio event that included a lengthy opening discussion of the July assassination attempt against Trump.
