The Trump campaign released a statement concerning a potential presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday, noting that Democrats could still change their minds about their nominee.

Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung shared the update from President Donald Trump’s campaign website following rumors of an upcoming debate between Trump and Harris.

“Given the continued political chaos surrounding Crooked Joe Biden and the Democrat Party, general election debate details cannot be finalized until Democrats formally decide on their nominee,” Cheung wrote.

“There is a strong sense by many in the Democrat Party – namely Barack Hussein Obama – that Kamala Harris is a Marxist fraud who cannot beat President Trump, and they are still holding out for someone ‘better,’” he continued.

“Therefore, it would be inappropriate to schedule things with Harris because Democrats very well could still change their minds,” the statement concluded.

The statement came after Harris responded to reporters on Thursday, claiming she was “ready” to debate Trump.

“I think the voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race on the debate stage,” she said after landing at Joint Base Andrews, according to the Associated Press.

Trump had previously scheduled two debates with Joe Biden. The president announced that he was dropping out of the presidential race after the first debate, instead endorsing Harris.

Harris has reportedly secured the support of enough delegates to become her party’s nominee. The nominee will formally be decided during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago held Aug. 19-22.

After initial concerns that former President Barack Obama had not endorsed Harris, both Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama released a joint statement on Wednesday to express their support of the vice president.

“Kamala has more than a résumé. She has the vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands,” the Obamas wrote.

“There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people. At a time when the stakes have never been higher, she gives us all reason to hope,” the statement added.

The statement by the Obamas also appeared to end rumors that the former first lady could enter the campaign as a surprise candidate during the convention. The attention has now shifted to potential vice presidential candidates, with the answer also likely revealed during the Democratic convention.
