President-elect Donald Trump defended comments made by his ally and supporter Elon Musk during a Mar-a-Lago press conference on Monday.
When asked about the criticism and attention Musk has received for his actions and “provocative statements about foreign affairs,” Trump defended Musk and reaffirmed his support.
“You mean where he likes people that tended to be conservative?” Trump asked.
“I don’t know the people. I can say Elon is doing a good job,” Trump said.
Although Trump did not comment on any specific person or party referred to by Musk, he expressed support for Musk’s ability to share his opinion regarding political candidates.
“I know he’s said some negative things about a couple of people that are running for office, but that’s not so unusual.”
In recent weeks Musk has drawn attention for his criticism of U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his response to the child grooming scandal within the U.K. Musk had stated his criticism of the government for its response to national calls for further inquiry into the scandal.
Musk harshly criticized Starmer personally for his role in the controversy, calling for him to step down over the failure to adequately prosecute and expose those involved.
Musk has also expressed his support for the Alternative for Germany political party and stated his hopes that the party would promote sound economic policy. His support has drawn backlash from German government officials who claim Musk is interfering in German elections.
Donald Trump is set to be sworn into office January 20, 2025. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are set to lead the Department of Government Efficiency within the Trump administration.
