President Donald Trump released a statement on Tuesday defending Herschel Walker, the Republican nominee for Georgia Senate, accusing the “Fake News Media” and Democrats of attempting to “destroy a man who has true greatness in his future, just as he had athletic greatness in his past.”

According to Fox News, Herschel Walker, well-known for his NFL career, denied claims this week that he paid a former girlfriend to get an abortion for $700. The supposed “bombshell” report originated from The Daily Beast.

Herschel Walker’s statement on Twitter

“Herschel Walker is being slandered and maligned by the Fake News Media and obviously, the Democrats,” Trump wrote in his statement. “Interestingly, I’ve heard many horrible things about his opponent, Raphael Warnock, things that nobody should be talking about, so we don’t. Herschel has properly denied the charges against him, and I have no doubt he is correct.”

On Monday, Walker posted a statement to his Twitter account resoundingly slamming The Daily Beast for the story: “This is a flat-out lie – and I deny this in the strongest possible terms. This is another repugnant hatchet job from a democrat activist who has obsessively attacked my family and tried to tear me down since this race started.”

Herschel also stated that he was “planning to sue the Daily Beast for this defamatory lie. It will be filed tomorrow morning.”

Trump added, “It’s very important for our Country and the Great State of Georgia that Herschel Walker wins this Election.”

Walker’s son, Christian Walker, also made headlines on Monday evening for suddenly posting a series of tweets slamming his father after the dubious abortion report broke. Strangely, his Twitter posts were in direct contrast to past words of warm support that he wrote for his father in June 2021: “Thank you for all you do and for your love of our GREAT country. Can’t wait to see all you do…”

Herschel Walker responded to his son’s attacks with class. “I LOVE my son no matter what,” he wrote.

Christian Walker’s rapid flip, along with The Daily Beast report, has led some political commentators to draw attention to the suspicious timing. With midterms less than 40 days away, Trump urged Georgians to cast their votes for Walker and ignore the white noise of the media’s attacks.

He concluded, “With all that Herschel has accomplished, when you come from Georgia, and you see the name Herschel Walker when voting, it will be very hard to resist. Don’t!”
