President Donald Trump jumped on Truth Social over the weekend to reprimand the partisan Jan. 6 Committee that has been investigating the events that transpired at the U.S. Capitol in 2021, lambasting them for leaking the Social Security numbers of nearly 2,000 Republicans and Trump allies online.
“Amazing story!” Trump wrote. “The January 6th Committee should be held liable for leaking this incredible amount of Social Security Numbers. These people are devastated by this having been done to them—and for all illegality in not reporting the facts. The only thing that was accurate was their illegally leaking, along with the Radical Archives, almost 2,000 Social Security numbers!”
According to a report shared by the president from Hot Air by Ed Morrisey, the shocking leak happened when roughly 1,900 Social Security numbers were exposed online after the committee failed to redact information in a spreadsheet released to the public in its last report.
Per Hot Air, Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R), and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) all had their Social Security numbers exposed, as well.
Gov. Noem swung back at the committee with several lawyers in tow. On Twitter, she remarked, “My lawyers have asked the @WhiteHouse, the @USNatArchives, and @BennieGThompson which of them is responsible for leaking the Social Security Numbers of me, my husband, my 3 kids, and my son-in-law. What specific measures and remedies will be taken to protect our identities?”
The legal letter, which she posted on Twitter, cites the “wrongful dissemination of Governor Noem and her family’s social security numbers” as being a “direct violation of federal law.”
Per the letter, Noem’s lawyers alleged that the Privacy Act of 1974 provides that no agency “shall disclose any record which is contained in a system of records by any means of communication to any person, or to another agency except pursuant to a written request by, or with the prior written consent of, the individual to whom the record pertains.”
