President Donald Trump on Thursday provided insight into an integral 90-minute conversation he had with Chinese President Xi Jinping, discussing a new trade deal that he described as a “very positive conclusion” for America and China.
“The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries. There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products,” Trump wrote in a statement posted to Truth Social.
Trump said that respective negotiating teams from each country would meet soon to hammer out the specifics of this potential deal. He also announced that President Xi invited himself and First Lady Melania Trump to visit China – a gesture the 47th president said he “reciprocated.”
“As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing. The conversation was focused almost entirely on TRADE,” Trump wrote.
This is a big step forward in the trade war between the United States and China following the implementation of Trump’s anticipated tariffs this spring.
In early May, the U.S. and China both agreed to pause tariffs on each other’s goods, dropping tariffs down to a manageable level and signaling the likelihood that China would soon come to the negotiating table.
In light of Trump’s newest call with Xi, it seems like China has indeed softened its stance on tariffs and is ready to hash out the details of healthy trade with the United States.
President Trump noted in his statement on Thursday that he and President Xi did not discuss anything pertaining to the war in Eastern Europe or the situation with Iran.
“Nothing was discussed concerning Russia/Ukraine, or Iran. We will inform the Media as to scheduling and location of the soon to be meeting. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump said.
