Trump transition team co-chair, DOGE founding member and Chairman and CEO of the American financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald, Howard Lutnick, will serve as President Donald Trump’s new Secretary of Commerce.

Trump posted about the new appointment on Truth Social Tuesday. He wrote, “I am thrilled to announce that Howard Lutnick, Chairman & CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, will join my administration as the United States Secretary of Congress.”

“He will lead our Tariff and Trade agenda, with additional responsibility for the Office of the United States Representative,” he added.

President Trump praised Lutnick for his role in “Creating the greatest Administration America has ever seen,” and listed his qualifications which include 30 years of Wall Street experience, along with his continued 9/11 relief efforts which began on the World Trade Center terrorist attacks in 2001.

Lutnick’s brother died in the 9/11 attacks. In order to honor his memory, Lutnick donated $180 million to the families of the victims and he currently serves on the Board of Directors at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. He has also donated over $100 to worldwide victims of terrorism and natural disasters.

Lutnick posted to X about his new role, stating, “Thank you, President Trump for your trust in me to help Make America Great Again. As the next Secretary of Commerce, I will join the best administration the US has ever seen and unleash our full economic potential.”

Last month, Lutnick explained the benefits of giving companies tax credits for working in America and refunding their tariffs for importing goods from other nations if the company moves their manufacturing into the U.S.

He wrote, “President Trump has solutions, and it starts on day one when we put an end to our unfair trade relationships.”
