Herschel Walker was endorsed for the coveted U.S. Senate seat in Georgia by President Donald J. Trump in a fiery statement last week. Walker has been a long-time fan favorite after a lengthy career in the NFL and his time as a Georgia Bulldog.
“Herschel Walker is a friend, a Patriot, and an outstanding American who is going to be a GREAT United States Senator. He embodies the ‘America First’ and the winning spirit of Georgia,” said Trump in a glowing endorsement.
“Herschel Walker will never let you down. He was a great football player, and will be an even better U.S. Senator – if that’s even possible! He has my Complete and Total endorsement!” the 45th president continued.
Republicans are eyeing the senate seat after two brutal losses last January in the run-off election between Kelly Loeffler (R) and Jon Ossoff (D), as well as David Perdue (R) and Raphael Warnock (D). After both Republican candidates lost, the two senate seats flipped to Democrats, giving them a majority. The seat Walker is seeking will challenge the current incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., who took office in January.
President Trump’s endorsement of Walker could help him secure the primary nomination for the GOP, and could certainly catapult his popularity statewide in the general election. The incredibly close run-off elections in January left the nation shocked after the state turned blue. In what will be just under a year and a half later, the GOP has a chance to redeem itself after its devastating loss.
Walker wouldn’t be the first football star to join the U.S. Senate. Now-Sen. Tommy Tuberville, former head coach for Auburn University football, took a surprising victory in the Republican primary over long-time Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., after President Trump endorsed Tuberville in July of 2020.
The primary for Georgia’s senate seat is not scheduled until May 24, 2022, and the primary run-off will be held on July 26, 2022.
