President Donald Trump has chosen Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio as Secretary of State in his Cabinet.

In the official statement, Trump wrote, “Marco is a Highly Respected Leader and a very powerful Voice for Freedom. He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior.”

He also added, “I look forward to working with Marco to Make America and the World, Safe and Great Again!”

Rubio, as reported by Reuters, strongly backs Trump’s “America First” approach to imports by potentially increasing new tariffs on foreign goods. PBS News reported that Trump proposed a 60 percent tariff on goods from China and a tariff of up to 20 percent on everything else the United States imports to create more jobs while boosting domestic production and manufacturing.

According to CNBC, Rubio’s assertive position on foreign policy matters is what America needs to solidify itself as the world’s most powerful economy and possibly why Rubio is the top pick for Trump.

CNBC shared that over the years, Rubio has been largely critical of China’s economic base and cited his report on the country’s industrial policy that he feels is a success due to “theft, market distorting subsidies, and strategic planning, Beijing now leads in many of the industries that will determine geopolitical supremacy in the 21st century.”

In addition to his support for new tariffs imposed on Chinese imported goods, Rubio has been heavily critical of the massive aid packages for Ukraine, and his new role could signal a potential end to the ongoing war. CNBC shared that in September this year, Rubio said, “Unfortunately, the reality of it is that the way the war in Ukraine is going to end is with a negotiated settlement.”

Rubio is one of the many high-profile candidates potentially joining Trump’s cabinet and will be joined by long-time allies like Dan Scavino, James Blair and Stephen Miller, according to RSBN.
