President-elect Donald Trump offered his condolences and respects to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at 100.

In a post to Truth Social, President Trump explained that, although having “strongly disagreed” both “philosophically and politically” with the 39th president, he believed Carter “truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for.”

“[Jimmy Carter] worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect,” he explained in his post. “He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed.”

The president-elect further added, “He was also very consequential, far more than most Presidents, after he left the Oval Office. Warmest condolences from Melania and I to his wonderful family!”

In an earlier post, President Trump noted that the numerous challenges Carter faced as president “came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans.”

“For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude,” said the president-elect.

Former President Jimmy Carter died Sunday at the age of 100 inside his Plains, Georgia, home after spending almost two years in hospice, the New York Post reported.

Carter, a former governor of Georgia, was elected president in 1976 against incumbent Gerald Ford. Carter served only a single term as president before losing reelection in 1980 to Republican Ronald Reagan.

During Carter’s post-presidency, the former peanut farmer has helped lead Habitat For Humanity to construct homes for the less fortunate, even winning the Nobel Peace Prize, according to the New York Post.

Prior to his death, Carter declined to attend President-elect Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20 due to health concerns, the outlet further added.
