President Donald J. Trump celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade Saturday night, calling the ruling a “victory for life.”

“Yesterday, the court handed down a victory for the Constitution, a victory for the rule of law and, above all, a victory for life,” Trump said at a Save America rally in Mendon, Illinois.

“This breakthrough is the answer to the prayers of millions and millions of people … and now those prayers have been answered to the generations of Americans in the pro-life movement as well as countless constitutional conservatives,” the president continued. “Your boundless love, sacrifice, and devotion has finally been rewarded in full. Congratulations.”

The Supreme Court’s decision followed decades of political tensions stemming from the court’s 1973 ruling on Roe, which established a constitutional right to an abortion.

On Friday, Justice Samuel Alito delivered the court’s fateful decision to reverse that ruling, holding that “such a right has no basis in the Constitution’s text or in our Nation’s history.”

Trump, in his Saturday remarks, noted that the historic decision was possible because he had kept his campaign promise to nominate conservative, constitutionalist judges and justices to the courts.

“Thanks to the courage found within the United States Supreme Court, this long divisive issue will be decided by the states and by the American people,” he said, adding, “And as for the Republican Party, we are the party of life, and we are the party of everyone.”
