President Donald J. Trump urged the Supreme Court Wednesday not to let up in its investigation into the identity of the individual who leaked a controversial draft opinion on abortion in May.
“The U.S. Supreme Court MUST find, reveal, and punish the ‘Leaker,’” the president posted on his Truth Social account.
Adding that he felt this should be “very easy to do,” Trump advised that investigators should speak with the reporter who received the document.
“This is a tremendously serious matter that has never happened, to anywhere near this extent, before,” he noted. “The Court will be compromised and demeaned until this very big problem is solved!”
The document in question, obtained and published by Politico on May 2, was an initial draft majority opinion authored by Justice Samuel Alito on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. Should the court’s final ruling match what was outlined in the draft, the result would mean an overturn of the precedent set by Roe v. Wade.
Although Chief Justice John Roberts ordered an investigation immediately following the leak, little has been revealed about the progress that has been made in identifying the culprit.
The most noteworthy development came May 31, when CNN reported that law clerks at the court had been asked to provide their cell phone records and sign affidavits, resulting in some of them considering hiring legal counsel.
According to the AP, the person conducting the inquiry is Supreme Court Marshal Col. Gail Curley.
“I’m confident that if the truth can be found out here, she’ll find it out and present it in an unbiased manner,” said Curley’s former supervisor at the Pentagon, Army Brig. Gen. Patrick Huston, per the AP.
But with the court’s final ruling on Dobbs expected to come any day now and worries of a potentially violent response on the rise, the court may soon have its hands full with more security concerns.
