President Trump issued a warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the Russian President was “playing with fire” in the ongoing war with Ukraine. Trump also warned that the situation had been prevented from devolving further because of the actions his administration has taken regarding the conflict.

“What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that if it weren’t for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD. He’s playing with fire!” Trump said.

Trump’s comments come amid reports that the U.S. could implement new sanctions against Russia in an attempt to apply pressure that would hasten Russia’s willingness to negotiate. The terms sought for negotiation include a potential 30-day cease-fire, which Russia has continually resisted. The prospect of increased sanctions has received support from members of Congress. Bipartisan efforts have emerged to implement steep tariffs against countries that buy energy from Russia.

Trump indicated on Sunday that he was open to the possibility of new sanctions after Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine.

The process of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine began shortly after Trump took office. However, peace talks have been slow and Trump has indicated his frustration with Putin over the continuation of the war.

“He’s killing a lot of people,” Trump said on Sunday. “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him?”

Trump expressed his frustration further in a Truth Social post on Sunday, calling Putin “absolutely CRAZY” for his continued bombing of civilian areas in Ukraine.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has reiterated President Trump’s commitment to reaching a peaceful resolution.

“President Trump has been clear he wants to see a negotiated peace deal,” Leavitt said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “President Trump has also smartly kept all options on the table.”
