President Donald Trump’s image will appear on a 24-karat gold commemorative coin as part of America’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.
After approving the design on Thursday, a federal arts commission authorized the U.S. Mint to begin production of the coin, though the coin’s size and monetary denomination remain unknown, the Associated Press reported.
“As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins than that of our serving President, Donald J. Trump,” U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach said in a statement to Reuters.
The gold coin will feature a picture taken by the White House chief photographer of the president leaning over the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, which is on display in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, per USA Today.
Acting chief of the Office of Design Management Megan Sullivan also reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent presented various designs to President Trump before sending the proposal to the commission. The president supposedly approved the image.
Commissioners recommended minor changes, such as adding wood grain to the Resolute Desk, and suggested the coin measure about three inches in diameter, the largest coin the agency can create.
The coin is expected to join several other special edition currencies and medals that the Treasury is releasing for the nation’s semiquincentennial year, including a separate one-dollar Trump coin approved by the Fine Arts Commission in January.
