Vice President JD Vance scored a major endorsement for a speculative 2028 presidential bid.
Virginia Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin officially endorsed Vance earlier on Sunday, telling Fox News that he would be a “great nominee” should he seek the presidency.
“I think Vice President Vance would be a great nominee,” Youngkin said in an exclusive interview with Fox News Sunday.
He added that “as people speculate on what’s going to happen down the road in 2028, I agree with President Trump and [Secretary of State] Marco Rubio. I think JD Vance would make a great, great presidential nominee.”
Youngkin, whose term as governor expires on Jan. 17, has been viewed as a potential presidential candidate in 2028, and was a contender on President Donald Trump’s vice presidential shortlist in 2024.
Still, the governor maintained that before Republicans over-fixate on 2028, they should put their current focus expanding and holding their congressional majorities in 2026.
“We have huge elections in 2026 to keep and expand our majorities in the House and the Senate,” Youngkin explained. “I just deeply respect the vice president’s reminder that we have to stay focused on today. And if we stay focused on today and deliver results, then Americans will continue to extend our license to lead.”
Though Youngkin’s political future remains uncertain, Sunday’s interview marked the first time he has publicly addressed the 2028 election.
The vice president has largely remained silent on whether he will launch a campaign, although he is widely considered as President Trump’s successor, not just to the presidency, but to the MAGA movement.
