Vice President Vance took a jab at one of President Trump’s longtime Democratic rivals on Monday in response to comments celebrating the peace deal between Israel and Gaza. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Ma., released a statement on X to express her support of the peace deal and her gratitude that Israeli hostages were being returned home.
“For two excruciating years, I have called for the return of the hostages brutally kidnapped on October 7th and held in Gaza,” Warren said. “Today is a good day. Surviving Israeli hostages are finally home and reuniting with loved ones. I’m thinking of them and their families on this joyful day and praying for their full recovery. I’m also grieving for all those who can’t come home today.”
Warren continued by outlining a vision for the future and a hope for continued peace in the region. “Today must also be an important step toward lasting peace in the region — peace for both Israelis and Palestinians. We must end the war in Gaza, surge humanitarian aid, and negotiate a two-state solution now,” Warren added.
Although she expressed approval of the historic peace deal, Sen. Warren did not specifically acknowledge President Trump’s role in the monumental accomplishment. In response to her post, Vice President J.D. Vance took the opportunity to subtly troll Warren on her past interactions with President Trump.
“The president told me he did this on Indigenous Peoples Day in honor of you,” Vice President Vance said. The peace deal was officially signed in a ceremony on Monday, which also represented the national holiday President Trump recently restored from Indigenous Peoples’ Day to Columbus Day.
Vance’s comments referred to the past rivalry between Sen. Warren and President Trump during her 2020 presidential primary campaign. Sen. Warren faced backlash after she publicly released DNA test results in response to President Trump’s challenge of her claim to Native American heritage. After offering to give $1 million to charity if Sen. Warren would take a DNA test to prove her heritage, Trump mocked Warren when the results showed only a trace amount of Native American ancestry.
