Something historic is happening in New York: last night, Trump-endorsed Republican gubernatorial nominee Lee Zeldin came within five points of overtaking entrenched Democrat establishment Gov. Kathy Hochul.

According to Fox News, Zeldin garnered an impressive 47 percent of the vote to Hochul’s 52 percent – a mammoth feat in the state of New York, which has been resoundingly blue for years. In fact, New York has not had a Republican governor since former Gov. George Pataki, R-N.Y., last held office in 2007, per RSBN.

Zeldin was very popular with many New Yorkers heading into Tuesday’s election.

Zeldin was within striking distance of Hochul, signaling an ideological shift in New York.

In 2010, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) won his race against former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) by just over 12 points, according to Real Clear Politics.

In 2018, Cuomo won his election by a massive 20+ points over his Republican opponent via Politico.

Zeldin’s near-victory in New York was historic, signifying the frustration that a large portion of voting citizens in the state have with leftist policies from politicians like Cuomo and now, Hochul.

Zeldin’s popularity among New Yorkers was also aided by the endorsement of Republican leaders President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla. Both men gave their endorsement to Zeldin, with Trump calling him a “WINNER who GOT THINGS DONE.”

DeSantis even rallied for Zeldin ahead of the midterm election, garnering thousands of attendees and drumming up massive support for the conservative ticket before Tuesday’s big day.

While Zeldin may not have clinched victory on Tuesday, his brush with the governorship should be inspiring to proponents of conservatism and America First ideals. If New York is shifting red, then that is a good indication that other progressive strongholds are likely shifting in the same direction.
