Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) released records on Thursday provided through an FBI whistleblower sharing details about Iranian-backed assassination attempts on President Donald Trump and other officials.
The assassination efforts were reportedly in connection with the death of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corp officer Qasem Soleimani who was killed during Trump’s term in 2020.
“Bad actors are determined to wreak havoc on our country, and American political leaders across both parties are sitting squarely in the crosshairs,” Grassley said in a statement, according to Fox News.
“In this extraordinarily heightened threat environment, federal agencies ought to be laser focused on building up public trust and reassuring the American people of their efforts to carry out their protective missions,” he added.
Threats were also included in the report against President Joe Biden and former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley.
Grassley stated that he chose to publish the documents from the whistleblower because the FBI was not being open to the public about the information.
“The FBI does not comment specifically on documents allegedly disclosed without authorization,” the FBI said told the outlet.
“Public disclosure about sensitive, ongoing national security investigations and potential cooperation from subjects is irresponsible and undermines the FBI’s ability to conduct thorough investigations and enforcement actions that keep Americans safe. It also puts lives at risk, especially when you are dealing with an adversary like Iran,” the statement continued.
The Iranian government has denied any involvement in assassination plots against Trump or other American officials.
The development comes just weeks after Trump survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, during a July rally. Shooter Thomas Crooks fired eight shots, grazing the president’s right ear.
One man was killed and two other men in the audience behind Trump were seriously injured. The shooter was killed in the response.
The threats are in addition to previous threats by Iran against Trump officials. In addition to Trump, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former National Security Advisor John Bolton and former National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien have been targeted. All three leaders were given Secret Security protection following the threats.
As RSBN previously reported, Trump’s campaign has also faced ongoing hacking attempts from Iran.
