On the anniversary of the nation’s independence from Spain, anti-communist dissidents organized a campaign calling on President Trump to aid their cause to free the island.
Breitbart reported that on Wednesday, a group of anti-communist dissidents organized the “SOS Trump” campaign. Despite being highly dangerous, the group members, Cubans, had held signs in public reading, “God Save Cuba, SOS Trump.” Under the Castro regime, this kind of act would be brutally punished, but members still persisted with hopes for aid from President Trump in ending communist tyranny.
The campaign follows the surge in civil unrest that Breitbart reported began with the July 11, 2021, nationwide protests calling for freedom. Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, the coordinator of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance, told Breitbart News that they are seeking support from the U.S. and will support any military intervention.
Gutiérrez-Boronat said, “I think they are asking God to crush the diabolical forces that undergird the Castro dictatorship and President Trump to arrest fugitive dictator Raúl Castro.” Castro, who has been indicted in the U.S., is currently facing charges of murder, conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals, and destruction of aircraft. Earlier this month, President Trump imposed sanctions on the communist Cuban regime to protect U.S. citizens.
In a presidential statement honoring Cuban Independence Day, RSBN reported that President Trump denounced the current regime. He said, “The regime in Havana today is the direct betrayal of the nation their founding patriots bled and died for. For nearly seven decades, the island’s communist government has violently dismantled political freedom, denied its people fair elections, viciously silenced dissent, and strangled the Cuban economy into a state of collapse.”
He added, “In the way of all radical leftist ideologies, the regime has quashed any hope of prosperity, banished the notion of human dignity, and starved the hopes and dreams of its people.”
In that same press release, President Trump also praised the people of Cuba for their strength, saying, “the Cuban people have demonstrated an unyielding devotion to the cause of freedom and a resilience of spirit that no regime—past or present—has been able to extinguish.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is Cuban-American, also shared a message to Cubans on the island, expressing hope in cooperating with a new, free Cuba, Breitbart reports.
