Devon Archer, Hunter Biden’s former business partner, will reportedly be testifying before the House Oversight Committee at last on Monday, July 31, according to a letter from the DOJ.
The DOJ initially sparked backlash among Republicans over the weekend who claimed that the department was acting to allegedly obstruct Archer from testifying by demanding the defendant’s arrest. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., noted on Monday morning, “After obstructing justice demanding Devon Archer go to jail immediately, the DOJ sends a letter again demanding Devon Archer go to jail but back peddling as fast as possible to clarify ‘after’ his congressional testimony.’
In this most recent letter, written to Judge Ronnie Abrams of the Southern District of New York, the DOJ clarified their request that the defendant (Archer) surrender to authorities for imprisonment, noting, “To be clear, the Government does not request (and has never requested) that the defendant surrender before his Congressional testimony.”
Instead, the DOJ requested that the court appoint a date for Archer’s surrender after his Congressional testimony.
For reference, Archer has been previously convicted in a $60 million fraud conspiracy of tribal bonds. However, his sentence has been repeatedly delayed.
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., flamed the DOJ on Sunday evening as he reacted to a tweet from Miranda Devine, which claimed that the department was attempting to arrest Devon before he had a chance to testify about his knowledge related to the shady business dealings of Hunter and Joe Biden.
He wrote on Twitter, “The DOJ is now actively committing the crime of obstructing a congressional investigation. @SpeakerMcCarthy @RepJamesComer @Jim_Jordan[.] If Devin Archer isn’t in the witness chair Monday, we better haul every SOB at the DOJ before congress EVERY DAY to make them pay for this. Lmk – I’ll come back to Washington tomorrow to do this. Archer is in that chair or Garland is. Yield me the time and let me ask the questions. I’ll handle it from there.”
Several days ago, the New York Post reported that the DOJ was pressuring Judge Abrams to set a date for Archer to report to jail, which drew intense criticism from the GOP.
On Sunday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy added, “A key witness in the Biden Inc. corruption scandal has confirmed he’ll cooperate with @GOPoversight investigators, despite the weekend filing by Biden’s DOJ. Anyone who tries to obstruct Congressional oversight will be held accountable. What is the Biden Admin trying to hide?”
