Biden’s highly partisan State of the Union (SOTU) address contained many misrepresentations and flat-out lies, which was unsurprising and expected. Perhaps the most shocking moment was his decision to directly threaten the Supreme Court justices.
Speaking about the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, Biden looked directly at the six justices in attendance and said, “With all due respect, justices –women are not without electoral or political power.”
As the Democrats cheered and the justices remained blank-faced, Biden issued his appalling threat. “You’re about to realize just how much,” he remarked, fumbling his words and then finishing his sentence with “right about that.”
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., blasted Biden in a post on X, writing, “It’s disgusting that Joe Biden threatened the Supreme Court for upholding the Constitution at the State of the Union.” She added that he was “a disgrace, a clear threat to Democracy, and unfit for office.”
Biden attempted to chastise those who were proud of the Court’s decision, claiming that the Democrats’ success in the 2022 elections was centered around so-called “reproductive freedom.”
He warned that “if Republicans gain control of Congress, they’ll ban abortion nationwide.” However, President Trump has said that the overturning of Roe v. Wade sent the abortion issue back to the states to decide.
Biden’s threat is not the first time a Democrat has threatened the Supreme Court over abortion. In 2020, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., stood on the steps of the Court during a pro-choice rally and issued a targeted threat to Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch. “You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
