Dr. Ben Carson has been selected by President Trump as the next recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In a post on Truth Social, Trump congratulated Dr. Carson on his new role within the administration and shared that he would be receiving the honor.
“Dr. Ben Carson will be an incredible National Nutrition Advisor for the United States Department of Agriculture,” President Trump said. “I will soon be awarding Dr. Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”
Trump continued by praising Dr. Carson for his commitment to patriotism and the conservative movement.
“He is a true American Patriot who cares deeply for the people of our Country, and never stops working to protect and strengthen Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, for all,” President Trump said.
Dr. Carson previously ran for president during the 2016 election. He has been an ally of President Trump since he dropped out of 2016 race and endorsed Trump. Dr. Carson served as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during President Trump’s first term. He also served as National Faith Chairman during Trump’s most recent presidential campaign in 2024.
The award from President Trump marks the second time Dr. Carson will receive the nation’s highest civilian honor. President George W. Bush previously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Dr. Carson in 2008 in acknowledgement of his contributions to the medical field, in particular citing ” his skill, his vision, and his dedication to motivating others to strive for excellence.”
Dr. Carson has expressed his desire to prioritize nutrition and health within his new role. At the time of his appointment as National Nutrition Advisor, Dr. Carson expressed his concerns over the effects of poor nutrition but shared his optimism that the administration could tackle the issue in a way that would improve American lives.
“Through commonsense policymaking, we have an opportunity to give our most vulnerable families the tools they need to flourish,” Dr. Carson said. “I am honored to work with Secretary Rollins on these important initiatives to help fulfill President Trump’s vision for a healthier, stronger America.”
