Elon Musk: A hero the ‘MAGA’ movement didn’t know it needed

Amid President Donald Trump’s historic victory on Nov. 5, his comeback was undoubtedly historic in many regards. From receiving a record high popular vote share as a Republican, to also winning a non-consecutive term, only the second U.S. president to do so since 1892, Trump certainly made history this cycle.

Arguably, one of Trump’s most impressive achievements was his ecto-party support, having been endorsed by former Democrats Tulsi Gabbard, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk.

All three were asked by the president to serve during the second Trump administration, and have agreed. However, Musk had one of the more unique journeys with his ascension into the “MAGA” movement.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO was always politically moderate, though frequently supported Democrats in their presidential bids, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden.

Musk seemingly left the party after it had become “hijacked by extremists,” criticizing the party’s monopoly on big tech, along with the left’s blatant censorship of disagreeing conservative voices.

In an effort to “balance” this public square, Musk bought Twitter in 2022, and rebranded the company, now called X, as a more speech-inclusive platform, even reinstating Trump’s formerly banned Twitter account.

Musk then released internal Twitter files showing the platform censored Hunter Biden’s laptop story during the remaining weeks of the 2020 presidential election, while locking out from their accounts those who reported the scandal.

Conservatives finally had a voice in the pubic square under Musk, who then pledged to support Republican candidates in future elections.

Initially, Musk had been a very strong supporter of Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis during the 2024 Republican primaries, with the governor even announcing his presidential bid with him on Twitter Spaces, NBC reported.

DeSantis ultimately lost during the primaries to Trump, whom he later endorsed. After the withdrawal, Musk stayed relatively silent on who he supported, but frequently criticized Biden on X.

During a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, Trump was shot in the ear and nearly assassinated. Later the same day, Musk took to X and officially endorsed the president.

Musk then started to actively campaign with the president, conducting their first joint function on X Spaces—an interview which garnered over one billion views, despite opponents trying to block the conversation from taking place.

Musk even joined Trump at his rallies, most famously his return to Butler, joining the president on stage to speak to supporters.

He even started a giveaway campaign, which awarded a $1 million prize to some swing-state voters who signed a petition supporting the Constitution.

Musk’s ownership of X also allowed for the president to post his agenda without facing censorship like that of four years ago.

Now, Musk, alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, will head the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) if approved by Congress. The agency would cut back wasteful spending and eliminate excess regulations, RSBN reported.

Musk undoubtedly helped President Trump defeat Harris, being one of many who felt dissatisfied by Democrats’ shift to the far-left while seemingly abandoning the center and working class.

His support is further testament to MAGA’s broad reach—a movement including Republicans, moderates and Democrats knowing it is time for a change in Washington.
