Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz will end his political career after leaving office in January 2027.
“I will never run for an elected office again. Never again,” Walz said in an exclusive interview with MS NOW.
He further added that he would still “do the work” of public service in other ways after leaving politics.
Walz has recently faced criticism over a massive fraud scandal plaguing the state. Since 2022, over 90 people have been charged with stealing U.S. taxpayer dollars from the state and illegally funneling it through institutions like daycares, Fox News reported.
Facing bipartisan pushback, Walz, who was seeking an unprecedented third term and had even been floated as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, announced he would end his gubernatorial campaign amid mounting public pressure.
“This is on my watch, I am accountable for this and, more importantly, I am the one that will fix it,” the governor told reporters back in December.
Illegal migrants residing in the state have been subject to the Trump administration’s deportation efforts, much to the ire of Walz and fellow Democrats.
Two protesters who allegedly instigated and interfered with federal agents during such efforts were shot by federal ICE officers earlier this month, according to the network.
Walz previously served as vice presidential running mate to Kamala Harris in 2024. The two later lost the election to President Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
